At the end of every summer, creating a memorable, empowering experience for local youth is a top priority. On August 23rd, 2022, we officially launched our very first Operation Backpack event to set our scholars up for a successful school year.
In partnership with Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC), a community-centered nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and families impacted by mass incarceration, the Kinnect Foundation and an incredible lineup of sponsors came together to create something truly special.
Our inaugural celebration brought together over 250 CPNYC scholars and their families in Brooklyn, uniting communities by bussing in participants from the organization's Bronx location. Attendees enjoyed an energetic afternoon featuring interactive games, dance music from a live DJ and a delicious lunch provided by Williamsburg’s Fini Pizza. NFL star Saquon Barkley also made a surprise appearance, sharing his experience growing up in the Bronx and encouraging our scholars to stay persistent and work hard to reach their goals.
Most importantly, Operation Backpack directly prepared 250 students from grades K–12 for the upcoming academic year. Every scholar received a brand new backpack filled with essential, grade-specific supplies requested directly by their schools. Beyond providing essential tools for the classroom, the afternoon gave families across Brooklyn and the Bronx a wonderful space to bond and spend quality time together.
