We partnered with Canon to teach an Intro to Photography workshop to students from Brooklyn Lab High School, led by our very own photographer Obinna Obioma, aka Obi.
Throughout his career, Obi's work has evolved from simple portraiture to a distinctive style that celebrates individuality and identity, influenced by his African heritage.
Obi guided students through a six week curriculum that explored both the art of storytelling through photography and the technical aspects of the craft, including composition, lighting and posing. Thanks to Canon's support, each student was loaned a professional-grade camera for the duration of the course, giving them hands-on experience and the tools to bring their creative vision to life. The workshop concluded with a final assignment that challenged students to apply everything they learned and showcase their growth behind the lens.
Students were challenged to submit photos that capture the essence of their own communities through a final project called "My Neighborhood", curated by Obi. Their photo submissions were then used in our celebratory gallery exhibition.
The exhibition offered a vivid glimpse into the lives and surroundings of these emerging young photographers. Using visual techniques and storytelling principles they learned in the course, they captured images that reflect the people, places, and moments that shape their everyday environments. Through vibrant street scenes, striking architecture, candid portraits and personal moments, each student revealed a unique perspective-supported by personal reflections displayed alongside their work.
One student was awarded a Canon camera through a drawing, giving them the opportunity to continue developing their skills beyond the classroom. We're deeply grateful to Canon for their generous support-providing cameras for each student and helping nurture the next generation of creatives.
The Intro to Photography program served as a powerful entry point for young creatives to explore self-expression through visual storytelling. Over the course of six weeks, students gained hands-on experience with professional camera equipment, received dedicated guidance and heard inspiring stories from Kith photographers. Alongside learning how to shoot and edit, students also explored how to thoughtfully present their work. What began as a technical introduction quickly became a space for confidence-building, creativity, and connection.
