We had the honor of volunteering with Heart of Dinner at the tail end of the Lunar New Year season, a time centered around renewal, family, and care for elders. The HoD team welcomed us in and shared more about the traditions of Lunar New Year, the customs that make this holiday so meaningful, and the unfortunate reality that loneliness among Asian elders is at an all-time high.
Our volunteers spent the day thoughtfully decorating gift bags that were later filled with culturally relevant hot meals, groceries and essentials. With guidance from HoD, we hand-delivered each package directly to elders living in the facility, taking the time to exchange smiles, conversations, and well wishes along the way.
We also learned about the cultural significance of red envelopes, which are symbols of luck, protection, and prosperity for the year ahead. Together, we filled them with small treats to distribute with the care packages, ensuring that each elder felt seen, celebrated, and remembered during this special season.
It was a day rooted in tradition, intergenerational connection, and intentional care - a truly heartwarming day of impact that reminded us how powerful community can be.
