Love Thy Community IV: Black Girls Sew

Love Thy Community returns for its fourth iteration, continuing Kinnect’s commitment to celebrating and uplifting the people who pour into our communities every day. This series is rooted in the belief that real change doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens through mentorship, education, and the consistent work of leaders who show up with purpose.

This year, we’re spotlighting community leaders who are shaping futures from the ground up. The mentors, educators, and change-makers who create safe spaces, pass down knowledge, and open doors for the next generation. Through their work, they remind us that impact starts locally, and that investing in people is the foundation of a stronger, more connected future.

We begin this journey with Hekima Hapa, Founder and Executive Director of Black Girls Sew, a community-driven organization dedicated to preserving Black fashion history while empowering the youth through sewing, storytelling, and skill-building. Through her leadership, Hekima is not only teaching a craft, but nurturing confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging, ensuring that young people see themselves as both creators and culture-shapers. Follow along as we dive deeper into Hekima’s work and how she is shaping the next generation.
